Lower Alemany Area Stormwater Improvements Project
Overview
As part of the Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP), the Lower Alemany Area Stormwater Improvements Project will improve stormwater management near the Alemany Farmer’s Market/Interstate 280 Highway interchange and in the Lower Alemany neighborhood.

Project Background
The project proposes to build a 10-ft diameter underground pipe from Stoneybrook Avenue to Industrial Street via Alemany Blvd., Gaven Street and Boutwell Street to carry rainwater away from the area and reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rains. Construction work would include a tunnel and other sewer connections in the area.
Project Status as of Spring 2023
The project is currently in design phase to refine the conveyance alignment and related systems to reduce the possibility of flooding during moderate and heavy storms. These efforts are being conducted in parallel with field investigations and environmental studies. Pending environmental review and SFPUC Commission approvals, construction is anticipated to start in 2025 with an expected duration of 3 years.

It is important to note that even after project completion, this area will still be at risk of flooding during heavy rains. Although our system greatly reduces flooding related to heavy rains, no system can handle the heaviest of storms.
