SFPUC Celebrates Milestone in Yerba Buena Island Redevelopment

The Power Enterprise recently energized the new main electric circuit on Yerba Buena Island, marking a significant milestone in the area’s redevelopment. The new electric circuit will play a critical role in providing clean energy to residents and businesses of Yerba Buena Island.

As part of the initial phase of redevelopment, the circuit extends down a portion of Macalla Road but will be extended to the rest of Yerba Buena Island during the next phase. 8,000 new units of housing will be constructed, some of which are completing construction and will be ready for residents soon.

With the completion of the new main electric circuit, the SFPUC is now ready to serve the new housing developments with 100% greenhouse gas-free Hetch Hetchy Power. Of the new housing developments, 27% of units will be below market rate, including a new affordable housing development on Treasure Island. Hetchy Hetchy Power currently serves a number of affordable housing sites across San Francisco with clean electricity at affordable rates.

In addition to providing power to Yerba Buena Island residents, the main electric circuit will also energize three new SFPUC owned and operated water facilities that will provide service to Yerba Buena Island and Treasure Island. The new water tank and pump facility will replace aging infrastructure and help increase service resiliency.

SFPUC works cross-agency to develop and deliver infrastructure that serves our customers. Reaching this key milestone was made possible by a partnership with the Power Enterprise, Citywide Distribution Division, Treasure Island Development Authority, and Treasure Island Development Group.
