Shop Small and Support Clean Power Customers This Small Business Saturday
  • Donald Pollitt II

With the holiday season nearly here and more consumers ready to return to brick-and-mortar stores, small businesses across the United States and in San Francisco are ready to offer some festive cheer this holiday shopping season.

Small Business Saturday, which takes place on November 26, is a day to celebrate and support small businesses. Small Business Saturday redirects holiday shopping from big businesses to local communities instead. The Senate passed a resolution in 2011 officially recognizing the holiday and a decade later, it is observed in all 50 states.

The SFPUC supports “shopping small” this season as many of our local small businesses are also our customers. In honor of the holiday, here are six small businesses that are served by the SFPUC’s clean energy programs,  CleanPowerSF and Hetch Hetchy Power

Boudin Bakery [Hetch Hetchy Power]
Since 1849, Boudin Bakery has been the home of a classic – the San Francisco sourdough. Known as the original San Francisco sourdough maker, Boudin Bakery struck gold with all San Franciscans with four simple ingredients that continue to warm the hearts of many. With multiple locations throughout San Francisco, Boudin Bakery offers a full range of dining options – from specialty breads and casual breakfast, lunch, and dinner – to a full-service dining experience.

Goat Hill Pizza [CleanPowerSF]
Opened by five friends in 1975 in Potrero Hill, Goat Hill Pizza is a neighborhood staple that has been serving its unique sourdough crust in San Francisco for more than four decades. Committed to celebrating its neighborhood’s unique history, Goat Hill is active in its community by serving as a gathering spot for school fundraisers and birthday parties, as well as a place for local artists to display their work.

Happy Lemon [Hetch Hetchy Power]
Founded in 2006, Happy Lemon brews fresh tea every day and incorporates generations of tea culture in all of its drinks. Striving to serve premium and fresh teas to all customers around the world, Happy Lemon quickly became a fan favorite and now has well over 80 plus stores in the United Stores and more than 1,000 stores globally. Located in the Salesforce Transit Center, Happy Lemon focuses on making customers happy one sip at a time.

Green Apple Books [CleanPowerSF]
An independent bookseller serving the Inner Sunset neighborhood and San Francisco community since 1967, Green Apple Books is a novelty that perfectly balances new and old books without ever losing focus on what makes it a great bookstore.

Pinhole Coffee [CleanPowerSF]
Located in Bernal Heights, Pinhole Coffee is a kid-friendly café that features artwork from local artists as well as source pastries from local bakeries. Pinhole Coffee opened for business in 2014 and continues to stimulate the senses with coffee, art, and community.

Rainbow Grocery [CleanPowerSF]
Serving San Francisco and the Bay Area since 1975, Rainbow Grocery offers the widest selection of organic and locally sourced products at an affordable price. And along with being the City’s local, independent grocery store, Rainbow Grocery is also a resource for its community regarding the health and sustainability of the foods we eat.

The SFPUC is proud to support and bring attention to the positive impacts that small businesses have on their local communities. Lending our collective support can be as simple as making a purchase or referring businesses to family and friends. Supporting small businesses is something we each can do all year long.

Happy Holidays from the SFPUC family to yours!
