The new EFWS Pipelines and valves will be installed at five locations to provide additional water source for fire suppression after a seismic event. The EFWS acronym which stands for Emergency Firefighting Water System (EFWS), was formerly known as AWSS (Auxiliary Water Supply System).
San Francisco Emergency Firefighting Water System is vital for protecting against the loss of life, as well as the loss of homes and businesses by providing an additional layer of fire protection. The system is also used throughout the year for the suppression of multiple-alarm fires. The 5 project locations are:
Clarendon Avenue and Twin Peaks Boulevard
Clarendon Avenue and Dellbrook Avenue
Clarendon Avenue and Christopher Drive
Clarendon Avenue and Olympia Way
Palo Alto Avenue and La Avenzada Street
For the Clarendon Avenue and Dellbrook site there are several trees which are being removed for the proper placement of the pipeline and valves. The SFPUC is paying an in lieu fee to the Public Works Urban Forestry department to plant the same number of trees in other locations.
