Installation of new electrical equipment will require two hourlong shutoffs on Saturday
San Francisco, CA – The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), the Treasure Island Development Authority (TIDA) and the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management (SFDEM) are notifying residents, businesses, and community organizations about a power improvement project that will result in temporary outages on Treasure and Yerba Buena Islands this Saturday.
Crews will install and energize electrical service equipment that will serve as the backbone of new overhead lines on Treasure Island. The new equipment will add electrical service capacity to meet future demand brought on by development on Treasure Island while also increasing reliability for current residents. The work requires de-energization of the Island’s primary service connection, requiring the Islands primary generators to power the Islands for the duration of the workday.
Transitioning the power grid to and from the generators will require two separate one-hour temporary interruptions of electrical service to Treasure and Yerba Buena Islands between 4 a.m. – 5 a.m. and again at completion of the work, anticipated to occur between 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. on Saturday, January 30.
To notify residents and businesses about the outages, TIDA has distributed standard Electrical Service Interruption Notices in four different languages—English, Spanish, Cantonese and Tagalog. In addition, those notices were also sent to the Coast Guard, Treasure Island Job Corps Center, Life Learning Academy, on-Island non-profit organizations and City departments operating on the island.
The notices will be sent a total of three times throughout this week. The notices are also being displayed on the Treasure Island Next Door page, distributed at the Treasure Island Food Pantry and posted at the Island Cove Market and Treasure Island Child Development Center.
In addition, SFDEM is encouraging residents to sign up for AlertSF by texting 94130 to 888-777. During the power shutdown, the SFPUC and SFDEM will provide communications support and updates on Twitter and other social media channels.
A public AlertSF message will be issued by SF DEM no later than 15 minutes prior to the afternoon outage at the completion of work to assure Island community's awareness ahead of the outage occurring.
Approximately 1,800 residents currently reside on Treasure Island. The SFPUC is responsible for maintaining and operating Treasure and Yerba Buena Islands' existing power infrastructure. The infrastructure is owned by TIDA, which inherited the system from the Navy.
An extensive redevelopment program is underway on Treasure Island. The program will produce a new neighborhood of 8,000 homes, more than a quarter of which will be offered at below-market rates, extensive open spaces, three hotels, restaurants, retail, and entertainment venues. As part of the redevelopment project, all of the power infrastructure on the island will be replaced.
