Diamond Heights Water Main Replacement
Overview
This project will replace pipes that are approaching the end of their useful life. The project will install 16-, 12-, and 8-Inch ductile iron water mains in two areas:
- In the west at Portola Drive from 200 feet west of Clipper Street to 200 feet east of Clipper Street, Clipper Street from Portola Drive to Diamond Heights Boulevard, Diamond Heights Boulevard from Clipper Street to Duncan Street and
- In the east on Diamond Street from 27th Street to Diamond Heights Boulevard, 28th and Duncan streets from Douglass to Noe streets, Valley Street from Diamond to Noe streets, and Noe Street from Duncan to Valley streets.

Project Background
We have contracted M Squared Construction, Inc. to install new water mains in the Diamond Heights neighborhood. This project will replace pipes in two areas that are approaching the end of their useful life by installing 16-, 12-, and 8-Inch ductile iron water mains.

What to Expect During Construction
Water main installation work involves some street excavation throughout the project area. This work may create noise, vibration, dust, and parking/ traffic impacts in the work zone.
Traffic control and “No Parking/Tow Away” signs will be posted when we are getting ready to begin work on your block. Local access for residents, deliveries, and emergency services will be provided at all times during work hours. We request that you assist us by limiting your use of the roadways within the construction work areas during working hours for the safety of the public and our employees, and to park in driveways or on adjacent blocks when No Parking zones are posted.
Should you need access to your property/driveway during work hours, please alert a crew member on site and note that there may be some slight delay to enter or exit your property/driveway to allow for crews to create a safe path of travel.
Please follow instructions from crew members and follow all posted detour signs.
This project covers roughly twenty different City blocks in your neighborhood, meaning work will not be happening on your block for the entire project duration. Water main installation is done in phases, so there may also be periods of inactivity during the work dates.
Main install for each segment should last about 4-8 weeks depending on segment length and site conditions. There will be a brief break in work after main install while the Water Department performs the required tests and inspections (approximately 4 weeks). We will then come back to perform service change overs, connecting each property’s water service to the new main (3-6 weeks). After service change overs, there will be some less-impactful connection work, connecting the new main to the old main at each segment end point. Final stage is concrete trench restoration followed by pavement restoration (ie. grinding and paving).
There will be a short interruption of water service when SF Water Department crews are making service connections to the new main. Advance notice will be given.
Although some inconvenience due to construction activity may be possible, we are committed to doing what we can to minimize impacts as we work to complete these necessary utility infrastructure upgrades.
