“Celebrating Ourselves” a Pride Spotlight on Milyn Sanchez

As we celebrate Pride Month, it's essential to honor and uplift the voices, cultures, and histories of our LGBTQIA+ community. At the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment that supports LGBTQIA+ rights and acknowledges the contributions of our diverse staff.

This month, we spotlight Milyn Sanchez, a Senior Human Resource Analyst in the Employee and Labor Relations Department.

Milyn embraces a profound sense of "Pride" in both her work and personal life. She shows her support by wearing rainbow-themed professional attire in the office throughout June. 

“My community can come together and really just celebrate ourselves with no prejudice or no judgement. Pride is about acceptance and being happy and being who you are, being unapologetically you,” says Milyn.

Milyn has been part of the City and County of San Francisco government family for almost 10 years and joined the SFPUC nearly a year ago. She was happy to learn about the LGBTQIA+ Affinity Group, a member run group within the SFPUC. Being a part of a group like this is very important to her. 

“I'm really excited to be a part of it. I just want to contribute back to this community.” 

For Milyn, Pride month is an opportunity for her community to come together and celebrate. It's a time when personalities and individuality can shine openly and safely without fear.

“We feel a little bit safer this month, and it’s good to express how far we’ve come along. Especially me. I didn’t really celebrate Pride until I married my wife. She has opened me up to the community, to Pride and she has also opened the rainbow colors to my wardrobe.” 

Milyn describes herself as being “a little shy” in the office and says it not her norm to share personal information about herself. But this year is different.  

“For me, I’m taking this opportunity because this year I feel more comfortable sharing.” 

In addition to her role in HR and her involvement in the LGBTQIA+ Affinity Group, Milyn is passionate about creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and included. "Creating a space where everyone belongs and can bring their whole selves to work is vital."
